Audience Feedback From The Transition Survey

This is the feedback I gained form my survey on transitions. It helped when editing our opening sequence as we developed an idea of what people expect from a thriller film and what fits the genre better such as fades and dissolves as the transition shown. Although, with the five people I asked, the feedback for when the transition should start was a bit mixed and hard to see the initial decision for what fits a thriller best. To sort this out I could produce more surveys with a larger pool of candidates and add more specific questions, using the current survey as a pilot survey. A majority of people said that they don't notice transitions made when watching a thriller and think that they should be subtle to enhance the vibe of the film. I also found that all five people said that they think the transitions should be similar to each other.

Film Poster for Losing Gracey

This is my final draft of a film advertisement poster for Losing Gracey.
I have taken inspiration from the other thriller posters in my film poster research post and have used a close up of the protagonist's face as the main feature of the poster in order to introduce the character. The lighting on the close up is very high key which contrasts to the black background, something that was inspired by the film poster for Black Swan.
I have added the tagline 'Am I losing my mind? Am I Losing Gracey?' that is actually a line from the voiceover in the opening sequence. By adding it to the poster it creates an enigmatic code yet also introduces the name of the film. I made sure to distinguish that 'Losing Gracey' is actually the name of the film by making it the largest piece of text on the poster and slightly darkening the colour to make it bolder.
To fit in with the colour scheme I used a selection of netural and negative colours and used a colour selector tool on photoshop to make the text the same colour as some of the colours I wanted to highlight within the picture.

Research Into Typical Content Of A Thriller Film Poster

In this Powerpoint presentation I have researched the typical content found in thriller film posters. This will enable me to create a poster fitting to the genre we have chosen and help me to include all of the relevant information expected to be found.

Film Composer Research

Transitions Survey

Transitions Survey

When watching a Thriller genre film, what transitions are most likely to appear?
Fade into the next clip     Fade into white/black        Swipe        3D box effect      Iris Effect

What transitions best suit a thriller?

Do you think there should be a variety of transitions or ones similar to each other?

Do you think a transition such as a ‘dissolve’ should start when the clip starts, start half way through or start at the end?

What transitions would you use if you were creating a ‘Thriller’ genre opening sequence?

When watching a film, do you pay attention to the transitions? Are they noticeable?

Out of subtle transitions or bold transitions, what is better? Also, what is better for a thriller?

This is the survey I created to ask five different people about the transitions of films.

Editing, decisions and transitions

This is how and what we used when editing and adding transitions.

Re-Touched Poster

After creating my first version of the promotional 'Losing Gracey' poster, I realised it did not meet all the conventions needed of a professional film poster. Therefore, I re-touched the original poster and added the conventions needed such as, the tag line, 'Is your mind reality or imagination?', the production logo and the age rating image. This is now more of a professional film poster and meets all the conventions needed.

Thriller Film Fonts Questionnaire Feedback

As part of the research into thriller film fonts, I decided to carry out some primary research in the form of a questionnaire to help gain an idea of what kind of colours, fonts and time lengths (on screen) of titles people would be expecting from a film of this genre.

I gave the questionnaire to a small group of people age 16+ as this is our targeted audience age range.
I found that although some answers varied, there was a majority answer in questions such as 'what colour font would you expect?'. The only colours that were given as answers were red, black, silver and grey. This may influence our colouring decision for fonts within our film as it is what people believe to be a conventional thriller film font colour.

Another popular response was that titles should remain visible on the screen for around 3-5 seconds and that rather than being shown over a block colour, background OR over clips of the film, there should be a mix of both to create variety within the opening sequence.

We will take other answers and suggestions into consideration when creating the titles for our film as the aim of the film is to try and please the audience which is why asking them beforehand what they would like is very beneficial to the production of our opening sequence.

Thriller Film Fonts Questionnaire

Thriller Film Fonts
Primary Research

What kind of fonts would you expect to see in a thriller film’s opening sequence?

Out of these selected fonts, which do you think would be most suitable to use in our thriller film, Losing Gracey?
1. Losing Gracey
2. Losing Gracey
3. Losing Gracey
4. Losing Gracey
5. Losing Gracey

Which colour font would you expect to see?

Should the titles be on a separate screen (i.e a cut to a block colour background), be written over clips of the film or a mix of both?

How long do you think a title should be visible on the screen for?

Do you have any suggestions for the titles in the film?

_________________________________________________________________________________

As a way of increasing audience satisfaction and general authenticity for our film, I feel that it would be suitable to use this questionnaire to gain an idea of the kind of things people would expect from the titles in our opening sequence. I will ask a variation of people, all aged 16+ as this is our target audience and use it as guidance for our production.

In this Prezi presentation I have researched two composers that are relevant to our genre of film. (thriller/horror) and the importance of music within a film.
